The present church was built in the early 14th century and is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. It stands on the site of earlier churches, the oldest of them an early Christian basilica from the 6th century. It is known for its Byzantine design and the richness of its interior frescoes. The monastery is part of the Medieval Monuments in Kosovo, inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage List for their importance to medieval church architecture and mural painting in the Balkans.
